For context, Russia went looking to find a buyer for Alaska, on account of they had finished killing all of the sea otters and there was basically nothing left of value there that they knew of, and there were only like 2,000 Russians in Alaska at the time of sale (and 50,000 Inuit but neither the buyer nor the seller cared). They offered it to America because it’d spite the British to have Canada surrounded by the U.S., and the US paid Russia $100 million or so in today’s money for the territory.
